DISTRIBUTION:

Psilopygoides oda (wingspan: males: 35-47mm; females: 46-48mm) flies in
French Guiana: Saint-Jean-du-Maroni, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, Kaw;
Venezuela: Bolivar;
Suriname: Moengo Boven, Cottica River; and
Brazil: Para, and Mato Grosso. I suspect it also flies in Guyana.

The female has simple antennae and a rounded forewing while the male has a quasi-elliptical forewing. Ground colour is brown with a purplish hue and there is a small orange discal spot near the costa.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Psilopygoides oda moths are on the wing in January and in October-November, suggesting two or three annual broods.

Larval hosts are unknown.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Female Psilopygoides oda moths extend a scent gland from the posterior tip of the abdomen to call in the night flying males which become active around 11:30 pm.

EGGS, LARVAE AND PUPAE:

Mature larvae descend tree trunks to pupate in underground chambers.

The pronunciation of scientific names is troublesome for many. The "suggestion" at the top of the page is merely a suggestion. It is based on commonly accepted English pronunciation of Greek names and/or some fairly well accepted "rules" for latinized scientific names.

There are many collectors from different countries whose intonations and accents would be different.

I do not know the source of the genus name "Psilopygoides", but it probaby means "Psilopygida-like" and but "Psilo" in Greek means bald, and "pygida" probably refers to the moths' posterior.

I do not know the meaning or origin of the species name "oda".
