Vermont Counties

This distribution chart is a compilation of information from Paul Opler's Moths of North America Website, the Lepidopterists' Society Season Summary, Tuskes, Tuttle and Collins The Wild Silk Moths of North America and personal communication with many residents of Vermont. See comments below the map.

Actual ranges may, in many cases, be more expansive than noted. There are some species indicated that may now be extirpated.

If Eacles imperialis pini and Hyalophora columbia populations exist, they will probably be limited to northern portions of the state.

Anisota senatoria and Anisota stigma populations are probably limited to southern most counties; same for Automeris io.

Nashota L. Jones reports an Actias luna from Elmore (Lamoille County), July 6, 2003.

Ruth Holleran reports an Actias luna caterpillar cocooning after turning peach orange August 18, 2003, in Windsor County Vermont, a 1/4 mile from the Windham Co. line.

I believe other species are probably throughout the state. There simply are not many people reporting them.

An Eacles imperialis larva with white abdominal scoli (subspecies pini) is posted on BAMONA for Grand Isle County. I believe there are also reportsof imperialis in both Crittendon and Addison counties. Those are probalby also of Eacles imperialis pini.
