Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador

Please note: Locations of towns and cities are approximate.

Located in northwestern Ecuador, bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean, to the north by Colombia, to the east by Carchi and Imbabura Provinces, and to the south by Pichincha and Manabi Provinces, Esmeraldas Province is host to many Saturniidae species.

The northernmost of the coastal provinces, Esmeraldas is also the lushest, and it is riddled with estuaries, mangroves, and flooded tropical forest. Its wild and remote inland areas, accessible only by canoe, make Esmeraldas difficult to explore.

There are probably many Saturniidae species yet to be reported there.

Horst Kach of Quito (Pichincha Province) travels extensively in Ecuador and has sent me images of many species collected in Esmeraldas Province and in the other provinces. This page is inspired by his efforts. Much collecting is done in eastern Esmeraldas in Lita, in Durango in the Awa Forest Reserve and sometimes in western Ecuador in Muchin.

Horst writes, "Thanks for appreciating my work. I really spend much time every day with my passion, and I drive, usually every month, two times out with my lights, driving 800-1000km each month with a ray of hope to get some new moths or eggs. I tell you, sometimes when I come back home after a long night with no sleep and hard long drive, I have a disappointed feeling when I have caught nothing exciting. That`s very hard ...... I call this true passion, always with much new desire and new hope, looking to the next new moon."

The name Ecuador is Spanish for equator, and the country straddles the geographic equator, from about 1°30'N to 5°S latitude; mainland Ecuador extends from about 75°20'W to 81°W longitude. Esmeraldas Province is just north of the Equator.

It is interesting that Esmeraldas got its name when the "Spanish landed on the Pacific coast in 1526. The conquistadors were astounded to find Indians bedecked in emeralds awaiting them on shore. Convinced that the region was abundant in the brilliant gems, they named it Esmeraldas." http://www.ecuadorexplorer.com/html/esmeraldas_province.html

Esmeraldas Checklist

The following table indicates the Saturniidae species that I anticipate are in Esmeraldas. Those species followed by (CL) are confirmed by Claude Lemaire. Those species followed by (HK) are not listed by (CL), but they are confirmed by Horst Kach. Species followed by my initials (WO?), are not confirmed, but I anticipate their presence (or feel they might be present) in Esmeraldas Province.

Rhescyntis hippodamia colombiana is confirmed by Carlos Mielke (CM). Those species followed by a questionmark are doubtful.

L. and T. Racheli have recently provided many additions. Their reports are followed by their initials (LTR).

Schausiella carabaya has been collected by Francisco Piņas (FP).
