WHAT'S FOR DINNER?

In the fall I begin storage of Saturniidae cocoons and Sphingidae and butterfly pupae in ziploc tubs in the refrigerator crisper.

In the fall I also bring in (from outdoor sleeves) late instar Sphingidae larvae which I house in large rubbermaid plastic tubs which are stacked, at best, in one pile in a corner of the living room.

My teenaged daughter, Caleigh, was entertaining a girlfriend visitor, Laurie, who was not at all fond of "bugs". The friend was somewhat distressed with the many tubs and occupants sharing her space. I had a few tubs open, was changing food and removing mature larvae to pupation buckets.

There were several "faces" made and then Laurie said something to my daughter about the grossness of all those bugs in the living room.

Caleigh replied, "That's nothing! You should see the ones he's got in the refrigerator."

I wish I had a photo of Laurie's face as she seriously and painfully queried, "You mean, he eats them too?"
