Updated as per James P. Tuttle's The Hawk Moths of North America, August 15, 2014 Updated as per BAMONA, August 15, 2014 Dedicated to Susan Reusser (Sphecodina abbottii), June 25, 2018 |
Sphingidae Larvae
Sphecodina abbottii final instar, Fort Wayne, Allen Count, Indiana,
June 24, 2018, courtesy of Susan Reusser.
Not all of the species are reported or anticipated in Allen County (Three are reported on BAMONA as of August 15, 2014; five more addded as of June 25, 2018: Manduca quinquemaculatus, Pachysphinx modesta; Hemaris diffinis; Hemaris thysbe; Eumorpha fasciatus; Eumorpha pandorus; Hyles lineata; Sphecodina abbottii). It is hoped that this checklist, with the thumbnails and notes, will help you quickly identify the moths you are likely to encounter.
I (William Oehlke) have added many species to the list which I expect are present or might be present.
Although this page was originally created to be representative of Allen County, it also serves as a valid checklist for neighbouring counties:
Elkhart: Paonias excaecata; Darapsa choerilus; Hemaris thysbe; Hemaris diffinis; Deidamia inscriptum; Amphion floridensis; Darapsa myron; Hyles lineata;
Kosciusko: Hemaris thysbe;
De Kalb: Hemaris thysbe; Eumorpha pandorus;
Steuben: Sphinx canadensis; Sphinx chersis; Ceratomia catalpae; Ceratomia hageni; Amorpha juglandis; Manduca quinquemaculatus; Manduca sexta; Eumorpha achemon;
Eumorpha pandorus; Hemaris diffinis; Hyles lineata; Darapsa myron; Darapsa versicolor;
Lagrange: Sphinx luscitiosa generally in northwestern Indiana as opposed to northeastern Indiana ;
Nobel: none;
Grant: Paonias excaecata; Manduca quinquemaculatus; Lintneria eremitus; Hyles lineata;
Huntington: none;
Wabash: Pachylia ficus STRAY;
Wells: none;
Adams: Pachysphinx modesta; Hemaris thysbe; Hyles lineata;
Blackford: none;

Please help me develop this list with improved, documented accuracy by sending sightings (species, date, location), preferably with an electronic image, via email to Bill Oehlke.
Please also send your sightings to BAMONA, an excellent on-line resource.
