Saturniidae Drawings

Jan Hellert of Germany recently sent me these four very beautiful prints of Saturniidae.

Actias groenendaeli

Archaeoattacus staudingeri

Aregema besanti

Argema mittrei

Jan writes, "For my drawings I use "Farber Castell Polychromos" (color pencils). The paper I use is "Arches" (it is actually a watercolor paper). For most pictures I have a specimen and some photos of the living moth but the picture is often not so important because I can imagine how the moth holds its wings when it is sitting on some twig/leaf.

"Once I tried to get a mittrei copula but somehow I had no success. So I could only imagine what they look like pairing because I have never seen a photo of it. Referring to besanti, I have to admit that I have never seen one. The only thing I had was the photo of a dead male in d'Abrera's "Saturniidae Mundi" and his bad description of the female. So I got the idea to show a damaged female to make it look like I have used a specimen as model and I had no problems with its outline (I just left the tails away, because I have no idea whether they are as long as the ones of the male - well, I think the outline is similar to mimosae but how could I be sure?!)."
