This deciduous tree grows rapidly and is hardy in Zones: 2-9. It tolerates dry to wet soil and reaches heights of 30 to 50 feet.

Leaves are opposite and have three to five lobes.

The foliage is green with a yellow-green fall color.

It is a good food source for Anisota oslari, Antheraea polyphemus, Automeris io, Dryocampa rubicunda, Eacles imperialis, Hyalophora cecropia and Hyalophora columbia gloveri, according to Stephen E. Stone.
