Eacles imperialis Compared with Eacles imperialis pini
Jonathon Tubbs' comparison of nominate imperialis (top) and pini
(bottom).
Eacles imperialis pini is a smaller, more northerly subspecies
of Eacles imperialis imperialis. Pini also tend to have more
generous dark (black or purple) scales on the dorsal surfaces of all
wings, but the greatest diagnostic features are the well-defined post
medial lines on the ventral surfaces of all wings in pini.
There can be considerable variation in dark scaling on both nominate
imperialis and subspecies pini.
