Saturniidae of Borneo

Borneo and Malaysia comprise an island southeast of Vietnam and Cambodia. Surrounded by the Java sea to the South, the Celebes Sea to the East and Malaysia and the South China Sea to the North, Borneo is host to approximately twenty-six Saturniidae species/subspecies.

Kalimantan (modern name for Borneo) has a tropical climate with very high rainfalls (2000-3560 mm per annum) throughout the year. The temperature ranges between 29-34 C (84-95 F), and the humidity percentage is 95-98%.

The rainy season is from October until April, and the highest rain - falls occurs from December and January.

With a land surface of 746,309 sqkms, Kalimantan is the third largest island in the world after Greenland and New Guinea.

The Equator passes through northern Kalimantan. I suspect that most of the Saturniidae produce multiple broods.
