The Bunaea belong to the Bunaeini tribe of Subfamily Saturniinae of the Family Saturniidae. These moths fly in Africa.

The larvae pupate underground.

This genus is still in need of revision.

There are many names which have been synonymized with B. alcinoe, and there have been many names synonymized with B. aslauga.

Thierry Bouyer now regards caffraria as a valid species, using this name for a specimen from northern Kenya, May 2012. I believe caffraria also applies to specimens from Ethiopia. (Bill Oehlke, May 2012)
