CALIGULA OF THE WORLD

CALIGULA OF THE WORLD

Caligula thibeta courtesy of Leroy Simon.

Caligula, as of 2005, is regarded as a subgenus of or grouped with Saturnia. Regarding a question I had about a possible subspecies of boisduvalii or jonasi, Stefan Naumann writes, "Currently all those taxa described under Caligula etc. are combined under Saturnia, and the oldest name available for the mainland taxon is boisduvalii Eversmann, 1846. As long as this group is not completely revised with type material I fear to determine anything safely, but as far as I see I believe fallax Jordan, 1913 to be a synonym of boisduvalii, and jonasi Butler, 1877 a different taxon from Japan. For me the specimen figured looks like typical boisduvalii although somewhat intensively orange coloured."
