The Speciosa Subgroup consists of those species with a large white "Y" shaped discal spot with a black axial line:
The Opis Subgroup has a small bipartite discal spot: opis, rubripes, rosacordis, flavosignata, bahiana, vagans, zikani, mielkei, and ockendeni. Most members of this subgroup are endemic to eastern or southeastern Brazil
Larvae have urticating spines which are conical.
