CERODIRPHIA OF THE WORLD

CERODIRPHIA BLANCHARD, 1852

Cerodirphia speciosa (male) courtesy of Bernhard Jost.

The genus Cerodirphia belongs to the Subfamily Hemileucinae in the Saturniidae Family. White bands on the dorsal surface of the abdomen typify species within this genus, and bands are found on all species except flavoscripta, lojensis and cutteri.

The Speciosa Subgroup consists of those species with a large white "Y" shaped discal spot with a black axial line:

The Opis Subgroup has a small bipartite discal spot: opis, rubripes, rosacordis, flavosignata, bahiana, vagans, zikani, mielkei, and ockendeni. Most members of this subgroup are endemic to eastern or southeastern Brazil

Larvae have urticating spines which are conical.

Cerodirphia cutteri larva copyright Kirby Wolfe

"Histamine is predominant in the poisonous substance injected [by apunctata] and treatment with antihistamines, preferably orally, is recommended, {Lemaire, Hemileucinae 2002}."
