Lemaire had divided this genus into three species groups as of 2002, with the groupings largely based upon similarities in the male and female genitalia.

Since then, the number of Gamelia species described has more than doubled.

I do not do dissections, nor am I trained to do DNA analysis. I often get asked to help people with identifications, when they have nothing more to provide than a digital image, a date and a location. Often the image is of a live moth, and the hindwings are not visible, nor is there a view of the ventral wing surfaces.

If you wish to try to id moths for yourself, using this website, I recommend the process of elimination method. I have set up charts that rely heavily on narrowing down possibilities as quickly as possible.

You can usually greatly reduce the number of possibilities by clicking on the location country. I believe the country by country checklists are generally quite accurate, and they are constantly being refined. In many cases I have created comparison charts for a given genus within a country. I use these3 charts quite regularly.

The first things I can almost always see that are pertinent for Gamelia species identifications are usually the 1) geographic location and elevation (sometimes I have to look up elevation on Google, based on location); 2) location of markings and 3) shape of the forewing pm lines, 4) basic ground colour and 5) level of contrast, 6) overall wing shape, 7) special diagnostic characters.

For the following image, I make the a number of quick assessments, listed directly below the image:

1) moth is from Shima, Junin, Peru, at an elevation of 450m;
2-3) forewing pm line is only slightly pre-apical and is almost straight, meeting inner margin about 1/4 of way in from anal angle;
4-5) ground colour is brown with darker grey-brown in basal area; little contrast in subterminal area;
6) forewing apex is quite pointed;
7) forewing ocellus is non-ringed; rather an orange dot encased in a black striga

By clicking on any one of the Peruvian species, listed above, I can access a link that will provide a comparison chart for the Gamelia species known from Peru, or you can click the following link for Peru Gamelia Comparison Plate.
