Leucanella species are distinguished by the hindwing eyespot which usually consists of black multiple pupils in a reddish brown iris with a black inner ring surrounded by an outer yellow ring.
Most of the species are montane, ocuring at elevations up to 3600m.
Many of these moths were originally classified as Automeris.
