Leucanella species are distinguished by the hindwing eyespot which usually consists of black multiple pupils in a reddish brown iris with a black inner ring surrounded by an outer yellow ring.

Most of the species are montane, ocuring at elevations up to 3600m.

Many of these moths were originally classified as Automeris.

Most of the larvae have black skins with yellow and/or white spines.
