LOBOBUNAEA OF THE WORLD

Lobobunaea angasana copyright Kirby Wolfe.

LOBOBUNAEA PACKARD, 1901

The Lobobunaea belong to the Bunaeini tribe of Subfamily Saturniinae of the Family Saturniidae. These moths fly in Africa.

Larvae get large, pupate underground and are probably eaten by people in various countries of Africa.

Lobobunaea phaedusa is the genus specimen type.

These moths are medium to large in size. The legs are without spines, distinguishing them from the Pseudobunaea. Males have falcate forewings and both sexes have large, coloured eyespots on the hindwings.

The larvae are predominately green, smooth-skinned and chunky with ridged segments. At rest, the head and legs are pulled back into the thorax as in the Kirby Wolfe image below.
