These moths are relatively small and day-flying males have falcate forewings. The somewhat larger females call during the day, but oviposit at night. Their forewings are slightly produced at the apex but are not falcate.
Both sexes have a clear, irregular "3-shaped" marking on the forewings and a crescent-shaped pupil ringed with orange and then black.
Larvae have feathered hair, and they fashion a thin-silked cocoon among leaf litter or using a leaf wrap.
The orinoptena subspecies have very dark forewings out to the outer margin which is toothed.
