NEODIPHTHERA OF THE WORLD

Neodiphthera papuana yellow male, courtesy of Stefan Naumann.

NEODIPHTHERA
Fletcher, 1982

Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:
"Neodiphthera was diagnosed by Bouvier, 1936, Mém. Mus. natn. Hist. nat. Paris (N.S.) 3: 142 (key), 194; thirteen nominal species were included, but no type-species was designated. Under Article 13(b) of the Code, genus-group names published after 1930 must be accompanied by the definite fixation of a type-species; * Neodiphthera Bouvier, 1936, does not satisfy those provisions and is therefore unavailable.

"No use of * Neodiphthera since 1936 has been found that by including an indication and a type-species designation would have made the name available."

Opodiphthera papuana, now Neodiphthera papuana (Rothschild, 1904) is the type species.

Stefan Naumann (February 2007) writes, " For albicera please mention the white ocelli on the wing undersides (name!) in comparision to papuana. N. goodgeri was found to be a synonym of papuana by Lane & Naumann, 2003, just a pink morph of the older taxon. Please see both figured specimens. All specimens are in my collection. N. nigroculata is cited in synonymy of papuana by Brechlin 2005.

"I checked the homepage and found that you enclosed several specimen in Opodiphthera which currently are handled in Neodiphthera (cf. Brechlin 2005 although this may be not the final classification). Those are: aruensis, ceramensis, decellei, doboensis, elleri, excavus, foucheri, gazella, goodgeri (syn. of papuana), grisea (syn. of foucheri), intermedia, joiceyi, monacha, thythmica, sciron, saccopoea, sahulensis, strandi, (syn. of sciron), talboti, tennenti, venusta (not venuta)."

I have updated the files and made the corrections indicated by Stefan.
