Periga parvibulbacea, male, copyright Kirby Wolfe
The genus Periga belongs to the Hemileucini Tribe of Subfamily Hemileucinae in the Saturniidae Family. Periga species are very similar to Lonomia species, but Periga are generally smaller and lighter in colouration and have an antemedial line on the hindwings. Also, except for Periga rasplusi, the discal spots on the forewing of Periga species are outwardly connected by a line which may or may not contain a smaller, similar spot. The hindwings of Periga species usually have a small discal spot.
Larvae have urticating spines and are highly gregarious, especially in the earlier instars, and members of this genus are found in South and Central America.
