SAMIA HUBNER, 1819: This Saturniidae genus (formerly Philosamia) is the only one in North America whose moths have a tufted abdomen.

In the larvae, the scoli alpha of the mesothorax and metathorax are subequal in size to or smaller than other body scoli; scolus Pi is never present on abdominal segments 1 and 2. Scoli are well-developed and conspicuous, cynlindrical, and higher than they are wide.

Ranges and classifications have been updated July-August 2004, based on Peigler's and Naumannn's A Revision of the Silkmoth Genus Samia. Individual files have also been updated from same. Many images from Leroy Simon, Thibaud Decaens, Mario Ioppolo, Wayne Hsu, Teemu Klemetti, Shin-ichi Ohshima, Eric van Schayck and Mark Lasko have been verified. Much information and many images are also from Ulrich Paukstadt.

Identifications are, in most cases, most easily done by geography.
