Adeloneivaia misionesa
Brechlin & Meister, 2011

Adeloneivaia misionesa? or subangulata?, Misiones, Argentina, id by Bill Oehlke.

Before the new species name of "misionesa" was put forward by Brechlin and Meister in 2011, the following two images had been identified as Adeloneivaia subangulata, and I had added subangulata to the checklist for Argentina, based on the image below from Oz Rittner who indicates it is from Puerto Iguazu, Misiones Province, Argentina. Ezequiel Bustos further confirms it with an image from Yacutinga, Misiones, Argentina.

DISTRIBUTION:

Adeloneivaia misionesa (approximate wingspan: males: 45-50mm; females: larger) flies in
Argentina: Misiones: Dos de Mayo, at elevation of 500m.

Regarding the image at the top of the page, Bernhard Wenczel had originally (before new species designations of 2011) identified the specimen as Adeloneivaia catharina, but new descriptions by Brechlin & Meister indicate it is a better match for Adeloneivaia misionesa.

The forewing outer margin is straight and more oblique in A. misionesa, and hindwings are narrower in A. misionesa than in A. catharina or A. catharina. The image in the Entomo Satsphingia journal shows a pm line even more oblique, meeting the inner margin closer to its midpoint, than in the image above. An image of A subangulata from Misiones, Argentina, in the same journal depicts a specimen with forewing outer margins not quite so oblique. To me, the specimen at top of page is intermediate between subangulata and misionesa.

Adeloneivaia misionesa male, 49mm, Misiones, Argentina,
on my home computer only.

I have moved the image at the top of this page from its previous location on the A. catharina file, because location, wing shape and other characters mentioned above seem a better match for A. misionesa than for A. catharina.

The species name, misionesa, is indicative of a specimen type location in Misiones, Argentina.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Adeloneivaia misionesa fly in January. There are probably additional flight months.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Adult Adeloneivaia muelleri moths emerge from pupae, and males are smaller than females.

Mating probably begins shortly after dusk with a likely calling period from 10:30 pm. to 1:00 am.

EGGS, LARVAE AND PUPAE:

Night-flying females lay translucent eggs on host plant leaves.

Larvae pupate underground in small chambers.

Care of larvae and pupae should be as for any Neotropical species.

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
