DISTRIBUTION:

Aglia sinyaevi (wingspan: males: 55mm; females: 65mm // forewing length: males: 28mm ; females: 34mm) flies in
China: Shaanxi: Tai Bai Shan Mountains, Tsinling Mts: Foping Nature Reserve; at elevations near 1500m.

On average this species seems to be slightly smaller than Aglia tau, but thus far measurements of male and female are from single specimens of both genders of sinyaevi.

The forewing of tau is brighter and 'cleaner' i.e., with less suffusion of darker scales in the basal, median and post median/terminal/marginal areas. The forewing marginal area is considerable wider in tau than in sinyaevi.

The hindwing of sinyaevi, like the forewing, has a higher suffusion of darker scales in all regions.

The female sinyaevi also shows a heavier suffusion of blackish-grey scales, particularly in the post median area when compared to the female tau.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

This species flies in April-May and possibly in other months, depending upon location and spring temperatures.

The preferred foodplant is probably birch, but sinyaevi probably also accepts beech, lime, oak, sycamore and walnut.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

I suspect the males are diurnal and pair with females during daylight hours as antennae seem to be black.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

The pronunciation of scientific names is troublesome for many. The "suggestion" at the top of the page is merely a suggestion. It is based on commonly accepted English pronunciation of Greek names and/or some fairly well accepted "rules" for latinized scientific names.

Often names were chosen without any direct link to the characters of the genus or species.

The suggested pronunciations, on this page and on other pages, are primarily put forward to assist those who hear with internal ears as they read.

There are many collectors from different countries whose intonations and accents would be different.

In Greek mythology, Aglia is one of the Graces and is the wife of Hypnos. Also known as Pasithea, Aglia is the mother of Morpheus.

The species name, sinyaevi, is honourific for Viktor Sinyaev.

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the anticipated foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
