This moth is very similar to Automeris ecuata, but A. parecuata tends to be slightly larger and darker overall appearance with orange rather than yellow in the hw median field. Males have a forewing cell mark that is darker and much narrower than in ecuata.

The species name, parecuata, is indicative of a specimen type very similar in appearance to Automeris ecuata.
