DISTRIBUTION:

Epiphora eugeniae (wingspan: males: 108-125mm; females: ??) flies in
Tanzania: Rukwa Region, route Kabungu-Sibweza, at elevations near 1080-1334 m.

Epiphora eugeniae is one of the largest and darkest species in the mythimnia group.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been taken in February and very early March. There are probably additional additional flight months.

Epiphora acuta larvae probably feed on Citrus, Maesopsis eminii, Paullinia, Zanthoxylum macrophyllum and Fagara macrophylla.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Epiphora eugeniae females extend a scent gland from the posterior tip of the abdomen to call in the night-flying males.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS, AND PUPAE:

The cocoon is double walled and resembles the cocoon of the Hyalphora.

The species name eugeniae is honourific for Eugenie, a step-daughter of Philippe Darge who has helped him greatly with his research.
