DISTRIBUTION:
Gamelia corralesi (wingspan: males: 58-60mm; females: // forewing length: males: 30-32mm; females: probably larger) flies in
Peru: Cajamarca: Ciudad de San Ignacio: Cerro El Chaupe; at elevations from 1800-2200m.
Male forewing apices are quite pointed and slightly more produced, and the forewing pm line is convex and more removed from anal angle in its intersection with the
inner margin, compared to similar species. I believe the forewing cell mark is inwardly filled with red, surrounded by black and then encased in a sub-diamond shaped
olive-green-grey box.
FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:
Specimens have been taken in October. There are probably additional flight months.
Gamelia corralesi larvae probably feed on Common guava (Psidium guajava).
ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:
Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males.
Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.
EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:
Larvae resemble Automeris species with their numerous urticating body spines. Larvae are gregarious.
The species name, corralesi, is honourific for collector Arturo Albujar Corrales.
Larval Food Plants
It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the anticipated foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive.
Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
