DISTRIBUTION:

Gamelia parvoocellata (wingspan: males: ; females: // forewing length: males: 29mm; females: probably larger) flies in
Peru: Cajamarca: Cutervo; at elevations from 1950m.

Ground colour is almost uniform dark brown with lighter subterminal/terminal areas. The forewing apex is not produced and only very slightly pointed. The outer margin is almost straight.

The pm line is pre-apical and slightly concave, meeting the inner margin about 1/4 of its distance from the anal angle.

The cell is an olive grey-green circle, outlined in black, encased in a grey-green olive ring.

The hindwing ocellus is quite small, and the basal and median areas are relatively dark brown with a wide, fairly regular, black subterminal band.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been taken in October-November. There are probably additional flight months. Gamelia parvoocellata larvae probably feed on Common guava (Psidium guajava).

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males. Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Larvae resemble Automeris species with their numerous urticating body spines. Larvae are gregarious.

The species name, parvoocellata, is indicative of the relatively small hindwing ocellus.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the anticipated foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
