DISTRIBUTION:
Gamelia pozuzana (wingspan: males: 46mm; females: 48-56mm (apical) // forewing length: males: 22-25mm; females: 26-31mm) flies in
Peru: Pasco: Oxapampa: Pozuzu; Ucayali; at elevations from 600-710m.
The male forewing pm line is markedly concave in its upper half, becoming quite distant from the outer margin. Ground colour is reddish brown.
FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:
Specimens have been taken in January, March, October. There are probably additional flight months.
Gamelia pozuzana larvae probably feed on Common guava (Psidium guajava).
ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:
Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males.
Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.
Gamelia pozuzana HT female, 48mm at apex, Pozuzo, Pasco, Peru,
October 2003, 600-700m, on my home computer only.
EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:
Larvae resemble Automeris species with their numerous urticating body spines. Larvae are gregarious.
The species name, pozuzana, is selected to indicate a holotype presence in Pozuzu, Pasco, Peru.
Larval Food Plants
It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the anticipated foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive.
Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
