DISTRIBUTION:

Gamelia progressiana (wingspan: males: 46mm; females: // forewing length: males: 23-26mm; females: ?? 27-35mm) flies in
Peru: Huanuco: Progresso; San Martin: Uchiza Dept.; at elevations of 500m.

The forewing apex is only very slightly produced, the outer margin is slightly convex, and the costa has less curve apically so it does not have quite the rounded appearance of the very similar G. sanmartiniana which flies at higher elevations in San Martin.

The slightly pre-apical pm line is slightly concave and meets the inner margin at about 1/4 its distance from the anal angle.

Ground colour is grey-brown with little contrast is any areas.

The small, rounded forewing ocellus is dull-grey-yellow (olive-green) with a black outline. There is no internal striga as in sanmartiniana.

The hindwing ocellus is oval, not rounded as in sanmartiniana.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been taken in February. There are probably additional flight months.

Gamelia progressiana larvae probably feed on common guava (Psidium guajava).

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males. Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Larvae resemble Automeris species with their numerous urticating body spines. Larvae are probably gregarious, at least in the early instars.

The species name, progressiana, is indicative of specimen types from Progresso, Huanuco, Peru.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the anticipated foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
