Gonimbrasia (Nudaurelia) anthina
Karsch, 1892

June 2005, courtesy of Nigel Voaden,
tentative id by Bill Oehlke.
The moth above from the Republic of Central Africa was posted as Nuduarelia anthinoides in its original internet posting.
It appears to be a very large moth (perhaps larger than anthinoides [little anthina]), and its location in the Republic of Central Africa lead me to think
that it might more likely be Nuduarelia anthina which is very similar to anthinoides but larger with perhaps a more easterly range. Bill Oehlke

DISTRIBUTION:
Nudaurelia anthina flies in
Zambia ??
and in
the Central African Republic,
Africa. Julius Busingye reports it from
Uganda.
The Natural History Museum reports it from
Buea,
Cameroon: Reserve du Dja, 25 km southwest of
Lomie (East Province), and also
from
Unsambara (possibly Usambara, Tanzania) in eastern Africa.
Thierry Bouyer does not confirm
Tanzania, but he does list
Gabon.
Nudaurelia anthina female, Reserve du Dja, 25 km southwest of
Lomie (East Province),
Cameroon,
June, 2007, courtesy of
Sebastian Brandner,
id (tentative) by Thierry Bouyer.
Thierry indicates the above moth might be N. anthinoides.
Lomie (East Province) is very close to the Sud Province border, so this
specimen may actually be from Sud Province.
SCI lists it from Ivory Coast: Adiopodoumé (October, December); Barrage d'Ayarné (January).
I suspect it is also present in Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, and possibly even west of Ivory Coast.
FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:
The
Nudaurelia anthina moth probably flies in the months of
October and December in Ivory Coast (SCI) and in January-February.
ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:
Eclosion is from
underground pupae.
Both sexes fly at night with the males coming in to
lights around midnight, the scenting time of the females.
EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:
Larval Food Plants
It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common
name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive.
Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
