DISTRIBUTION:

Lobobunaea jeanneli (forewing length: 64-68mm; Pinhey) flies in Rwanda. Thierry Bouyer reports it from Kenya and indicates it may also fly in Tanzania. I suspect it is also found in Uganda.

T. Bouyer equates the moth he named/described as L. dallastai with Lobobunaea jeanneli.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Lobobunaea jeanneli moths are on the wing in April-May and possibly at other times.

Larval hosts are unknown.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Lobobunaea jeanneli females attract males with an airbourne pheromone.

EGGS, LARVAE AND PUPAE:

Females deposit eggs at night on hostplant foliage. Larvae feed and mature in approximately six weeks. At maturity, the larvae leave the host plant to pupate in subterranean chambers.

The genus name Lobobunaea, is from the Greek and refers to a lobed hill-dweller. The genus specimen type is Lobobunaea phaedusa, males of which have a valve with a subapical lobe. The hindwings are also lobed at the anal angle. It may also be a montane species.

The species name jeanneli is honourific for the French collector Dr. R. Jeannel, who is noted for his expeditions into eastern Africa.
