DISTRIBUTION:

Prohylesia bahikani (wingspan: males: 40mm; females: // fwl: males: 17-21mm; females: ) flies in
Brazil: Bahia: Camacan; Mun. Marau; at elevations from 150-750m.

This species tends to be slightly smaller on average than Prohylesia zikani which tends to be darker and more reddish brown with a larger forewing cell.

Zikani and bahikani are sympatric in Bahia, Brazil.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Moths are on the wing in March-April and June. There may be additional flight months.

Larval hosts were unknown.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of the abdomen to call in the night-flying males. Most male activity occurs from 10:00 pm until shortly after midnight.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Prohylesia bahikani larvae are similar to Automeris larvae, being gregarious and having urticating spines. The species name bahikani is indicative of a specimen type location from the Bahia, Brazil, and a great similarity to Prohylesia zikani.
