DISTRIBUTION:

Saturnia (Rinaca) florianii (wingspan: males: 94-97mm; females: // forewing length: males: 48-50mm; females: ) flies in
China: Sichuan, S of Kangding, 2800 m., near Menghugang. 15.X.2009. leg. Floriani & Saldaitis. Specimens have been taken at elevations from 2100-2800m.

This species belongs to the subgroup Saturnia (Rinaca) winbrechlini Brechlin 2000:
Saturnia (Rinaca) winbrechlini Brechlin 2000;
Saturnia (Rinaca) minshanensis Brechlin 2011;
Saturnia (Rinaca) florianii Brechlin 2011.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been taken in October. There are probably additional fall flight months.

Local host plants are unknown at this time.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males. Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

The species name is honourific for the Italian collector, Alessandro Floriani.
