DISTRIBUTION:

Saturnia (Rinaca) minshanensis (wingspan: males: 107mm; females: // forewing length: males: 55mm; females: ) flies in
China: Gansu prov., Min Shan Mts., 2350 m., 50 km. W Wudu, 104º35'E, 33º30'N.Holotype: MWM. male ?. 27.VII-14.VIII.2000.

This species belongs to the subgroup Saturnia (Rinaca) winbrechlini Brechlin 2000:
Saturnia (Rinaca) winbrechlini Brechlin 2000;
Saturnia (Rinaca) minshanensis Brechlin 2011;
Saturnia (Rinaca) florianii Brechlin 2011.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been taken in July-August. There are probably additional flight months in the fall.

Local host plants are unknown at this time.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males. Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

The species name, minshanensis, is indicative of a specimen type locality in the Min Shan Mountains of Gansu Province China.
