DISTRIBUTION:

Protambulyx ockendeni (forewing length: 105-110mm), flies in Peru (specimen type locality) and through much of Central and South America. It has also been recorded in Bolivia: Beni (1600m).

FLIGHT TIMES:

Protambulyx ockendeni adults probably fly throughout the year. Hubert Mayer sends an image of a specimen taken in June.

Adults nectar from flowers.

ECLOSION:

Pupae probably wiggle to surface from subterranean chambers just prior to eclosion.

SCENTING AND MATING:

Females call in the males with a pheromone released from a gland at the tip of the abdomen.

EGGS, LARVAE, PUPAE:

Larvae feed on plants in the Anacardiaceae family: Anacardium, Spondias, Erythoxylon, Comocladia.

Moths may eclose within fourteen days of pupation.
