JUNONIA COENIA: THE BUCKEYE
The Buckeye (2.0-2.3") is
widely distributed
across the North American continent from south eastern Canada
throughout all the U.S. except the northwest. There
are populations in Mexico.
| In New Jersey, I often found adults nectaring
in wide open fields or meadows.
The larvae of this species feed mainly on plantain, Monkey Flower,
Snap Dragon, and Gerardia.
There are usually two generations/year in New Jersey and freshly made
chrysalids from the first generation emerge within two weeks. There
are more broods as one moves further south and this species overwinters
as adults. |
Pupae are attached at cremaster by a strong
silkpad affixed to grass or hostplant stem.
Those larvae, which are going to overwinter as
pupae, seek out a semi-sheltered pupation site. | |

| Google is one of my favourite Search Engines and seems to offer the most
extensive listing of butterfly sites. Use your back arrow to return to this site after using the
Google search box to the left. |
To use Google most effectively, type in either the complete Latin name for the butterfly or
the complete common name followed by the word butterfly. If I wanted additional information
about the red admiral, I would type in "Vanessa atalanta" or "red admiral butterfly" and then
click on the Google Go button to the left.
Here are some additonal northeastern North American butterflies of interest.
To my knowledge, these species do not fly on Prince Edward Island, but I have reared
most of them as a boy growing up in rural New Jersey.
