Actias luna, spring male, posed, courtesy of Robert Nuelle, III.
Robert sent me this image of a male, taken at lights in Huntsville, Texas, March 25, 2004. He placed it on some foliage and clicked the camera. I manipulated the image somewhat with a rotation to orientate the moth vertically, tails down.
Beautiful burgundy/pink outer margins are typical only of spring brood, those moths that have overwintered in cocoons.
