Hyalophora kasloensis ?

Robert Vandermoor sent me this note and the following pictures which are either of Hyalophora kasloensis or a possible hybrid or intergrade. There is a larval image at bottom of page.

"Hello Bill,

"Here are the photos as previously described. I have included one photo of a last instar larva that I am curently rearing. What I was hoping was you might be able to shed a little light on is which species these are, kasloensis, euryalus or possibly a mix of each or even a mix of gloveri. I am currently rearing larva collected from gravid females from the same area as where these adults were collected. All the larva are now last instar and all dorsal scoli are orange to coral red. My thoughts are that they are kasloensis and nothing more but I'm just not sure and some others that have seen these photos are unsure themselves. Photos #1-8 were all collected from the Balmoral, Shuswap Kamloops area of B.C. (southern interior) May 31, 2002. Photo #9 was collected from the Lytton area of B.C. (Fraser Canyon- southern interior) as part of a mating pair May 9, 1992.

"Just as a side note I have reared these larva to a healthy last instar on California Lilac- Ceanothus impressus 'Victoria' which I purchased from the local bedding plant nursery. They took this food plant without hesitation and in fact preferred it over one of their natural food plants Sheperdia canadensis.

"Thanks, Bill, for taking the time to reply to my original e-mail and your interest in these photos.

"Best regards, Robert Vandermoor
