Saturniidae of Costa Rica

Copaxa curvilinea male, copyright protected, courtesy of Kirby Wolfe.

This checklist is a compilation of the studies done by Dan Janzen and the data from Lemaire's Arsenurinae: 1980, Attacinae: 1978, Ceratocampinae: 1988 and Hemileucinae: 2002.

I have made additions (2012-13) based on Entomo Satsphingia journals: 2010-2011.

April 23, 2013, I have updated this page as per article provided by Dan Janzen.

OXYTENINAE

Sometimes the Oxyteninae are treated as Oxytenidae, a family distinct from Saturniidae; sometimes they are treated as Oxyteninae, a subfamily of Saturniidae.

ARSENURINAE

Dysdaemonia boreas male, copyright protected, Kirby Wolfe.

Most of the Arsenurinae are a shade of brown, and most (except the Rhescyntis) have tails or tail-like projections, generally somewhat reduced in the females.
