Spreading Butterflies: Step 3. Set the pin height. You can do this visually or using a pinning block to standardize all your specimens. The defacto standard is to set the butterfly about two thirds the way up the length of the pin. You must leave clearance at the top of the pin so that you can handle the pinned specimens without hitting the wings with your fingers - at least 3/8", maybe more. But don't position the butterfly too low on the pin because that space will be needed for labels and such.
